  • Library - What are Culture Passes and how do I check one out?

    Tempe Public Library participates in the Act One Culture Pass program.

    With a valid library card you can check out passes for the various museums and institutions.
    Check the library catalog for a full list and availability. The pass will be available at library opening on the listed due date.

    Guidelines:

    • First come, first serve; no reservations
    • You may check out one pass at a time and only two passes per month
    • Passes are valid for seven days
    • One pass admits two people
    • NOTE: Most Culture Passes are not valid during special events and exhibits

    In addition to the passes for museums and culture institutions, Act One periodically offers passes to select performances including theater, ballet, music, comedy, and more. Check the Culture Pass display to see what's available!

  • Library - Does the library offer exam proctoring services?

    The library does not offer exam proctoring services. Generally proctors must be from a university, college, or military base and accredited with the National College Testing Association.

  • Library - What happens if I lose or damage something I checked out?

    When an item has been lost or damaged beyond library use, the cardholder account is charged the retail price of the item. Please review the Lost, Damaged , or Unreturned Items section in the Borrower Privileges Policy.

    To pay for the lost or damaged item, you can Log-in to your library account and click "Fines & Fees" on the left menu. Follow the directions to complete online payment. You can also come in to the library and pay at the Library Cards and Cashier window.

    Additionally, the cardholder assumes responsibility for inspecting and keeping library items free from bed bug infestations.   • Library - How do I donate to the library?

    Donated books and materials are given to the Friends of the Tempe Public Library, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and sold through their bookstore. Funds acquired through book sales are dedicated to supporting Tempe Library programs and services. A tax receipt may be picked up in the library to be filled out by the donor.

    The following items are no longer accepted: Magazines, VHS tapes and text books older than 2010.

    The Friends are also participants in the Amazon Smile program.

  • Library - How do I volunteer at the library?

    City of Tempe Volunteer Opportunities are managed by the Community Services Department Volunteer Coordinator, on the 2nd floor of the Tempe Public Library. Volunteers can register by calling (480) 350-5190 or on the Volunteer page.

    Teens interested in volunteering at the Teen Library should contact the Teen Services Specialist Victoria Aguilar at victoria_aguilar@tempe.gov.

  • Library - How do I reserve a program room for a group?

    The Library has two program rooms available for public rental, for an hourly rate. Click here for basic information about the rooms, availability, rates, reservations, and what to expect on the day of your event.

    We also have free study rooms that can accommodate 1-8 persons. 

     

  • Library - How do I print/photocopy/scan at the library?

    All equipment is self-serve, with basic assistance provided by staff.

    • Wireless printing is available!  Print documents from your laptop, tablet, smartphone, even send print jobs from your home computer.
    • To print:
    1. Using a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, open a browser and go to print.princh.com.
    2. Enter ID 107840.
    3. Upload your document(s). *For color printing, click settings and choose color.*
    4. Come to the library, pay, and get your print job!
    • Users can print from the library's public computer terminals.
    • Printing is $0.20/page (B&W) and $0.75/page (color).
    • Photocopying is $0.20/page (B&W) and $0.75/page (color).
    • Cash payments can be made at our self service kiosk using $1.00 bills, nickels, dimes, or quarters.
    • Debit/Credit payments accepted at cashier window ($1.00 minimum charge).
    • Scanning to email is free of charge.

     

  • Library - How do I request an interlibrary loan?

    Please note that we cannot order books less than six months old, DVDs, CDs, and textbooks through interlibrary loan. 

    When requesting an interlibrary loan (ILL) you must agree to the following terms:

    • Failure to pick up requested materials within seven (7) days of notification or failure to pay lending fees assessed by the lending library will result in a $5.00 per item fee. ILL requests cannot be cancelled.
    • ILL materials returned late will be assessed an overdue fee of $1.00 per day.
    • If an ILL item is lost or damaged, the borrower will be responsible for the lending library's replacement fee. Please note that replacement cost of library items may be as high several hundred dollars over the purchase price of the item.
    • Interlibrary loan items must be returned directly to one of our library staff members. They may not be placed in the book return.

  • Library - How do I place items on hold?

    Library card holders may request items to be held for them at the library. We will put it on our Hold Shelf near the library cashier and label it with your name. You have seven days to pick it up and check it out.

    A library user may have up to 30 hold requests at any one time.

    How to Place a Request:

    • Locate an item in our catalog
    • Click the "Place Request" button
    • Enter your library card number and PIN (by default this is set to the last 4 digits of your phone number)
    • Click "Submit Request"

    Please note: You cannot place holds on Bestseller Express items or Culture Passes.

  • Library - How many items can I check out, and for how long?

  • Library - How do I use a library study room?

    Tempe Public Library offers 8 study rooms for patron use, free of charge. Learn more...

    Policies:

    • Study rooms can be reserved online or at the library with a valid library card and PIN.
    • Users will be limited to one active reservation per day with a maximum time limit of 2 hours.
    • A reservation can be made for either one hour or two hour increments.
    • If a user is 15 minutes late for their reserved time, the reservation will be forfeited.

  • Library - How do I return library materials?

    All materials (except interlibrary loans) can be returned:
    • During normal business hours: Book drop - inside the library, to the left, on the main floor
    • All hours, including after closing & holidays: Drive-up book drop; located on the west side of the building

    Interlibrary loan materials must be returned in person to a library staff member.

  • Library - How do I use a public computer at the library?

    Tempe Public Library card holders have free access to public computers, including:

    • Computers for use by adults (Main Floor)
    • Computers for use by teens (Teen Room - Lower Level)
    • Computers for use by children (Youth Library - Lower Level)
    • Family Computers Area for use by young children and their guardians; includes youth computers with age-appropriate educational software and games  (Youth Library - Lower Level)

    Public Computers provide Internet access and Microsoft Word.

  • Library - How do I get or replace a library card?

    Tempe Public Library cards are available free of charge to all Maricopa County residents, and to those who work or go to school within Tempe, with photo ID and proof of address.

    Library users who have lost their Tempe Public Library card may apply for a replacement card by showing valid identification. Lost cards must be reported to the library immediately. If a card which was reported lost is found, it should be destroyed or returned to the library for disposal.

    You may apply for an eCard online, which will allow you to use our online resources for 3 weeks until you visit the library and receive a physical card.

    Note: If you use Libby and replaced your library card, you will need to have your old and new account merged in order to migrate your Libby holds. Please ask library staff at the Answers Desk to help you or call the Library at (480) 350-5500 for assistance.

  • Library - How do I renew library items?

    Your eligible items will automatically be renewed on the due date.

    • Items can be renewed up to 3 times, as long as no holds have been placed on them by other library customers.
    • *Bestseller Express items, Culture Passes and Interlibrary Loans cannot be renewed. For more information, see our Borrower Privileges Policy.

  • Library - How do I reset my library card PIN?

    Log into your library account here.

    If you know your current PIN:
    Log in → click on "Change PIN" in "My Record".

    If you do not know your current PIN:
    Generally your PIN is the last four digits of the phone number your registered your account with. If you changed your PIN, or you can't recall which phone number is attached to the account, select "Forgot your password" and follow the instructions.

    If you are still unable to log-in please ask library staff at the Library Cards window to help you, or call the Library at (480) 350-5500 for assistance.

  • Library - How do I suggest a library purchase?

    You can make a suggestion in-person or online. Learn more about library materials and selection in our Collection Development policy

     

  • Library - How do I use wireless internet at the Library?

    The library offers free City of Tempe wi-fi.

    1. Select the TEMPEPUBLIC wireless network on your device.
    2. A pop-up or notification will prompt you to log in. If the pop-up does not appear, try opening a new browser window to launch the login page.
    3. Accept the "Terms of Service" and you will be logged on.
